Abiding When You Don't Know Your Next Move

Abiding When You Don't Know Your Next Move

“We do not know what to do, but our eyes are on You.”
— 2 Chronicles 20:12

Reflection

There are moments when you genuinely do not know what to do.

You have prayed. You have thought it through. You have looked at the consequences from every angle.

And you still do not know your next best step.

I know what it feels like when uncertainty comes from fear and exhaustion.

I know what it feels like to be worn down by a situation I cannot immediately change.

And I know what it feels like when the thing I prayed for becomes real enough to carry consequences and judgment.

That is what I call being frozen by fear in uncertainty.

That is why 2 Chronicles 20 stopped me this week.

King Jehoshaphat learns that a massive army is coming against Judah. Scripture says he was afraid.

He did not pretend to have a plan.

He sought the Lord and called the people to do the same.

Then he prayed:

“We do not know what to do, but our eyes are on You.”
— 2 Chronicles 20:12

They did not know what to do.

They did know where to look.

Maybe that is one of the clearest pictures of abiding under pressure.

Abiding is not always knowing what to do next. Sometimes it is staying close enough to God that fear does not become your counselor while you are waiting for clarity.

Staying close to Him over time deepens the relationship. Choosing Him in a single moment of fear, pressure, or uncertainty is abiding in faith.

When we are uncomfortable, we want relief.

We want the answer.

We want movement.

We want something to change.

But urgency is not always conviction.

Exhaustion is not always wisdom.

Fear is not always discernment.

Sometimes the most faithful thing we can do is stay close long enough for the noise to quiet down and our faith to stand firm.

Long enough to remember what is true.

Long enough to separate what we fear from what God has actually said.

Long enough to recognize whether we are moving from conviction or simply trying to escape the discomfort of not knowing.

That is where the armor of God matters too.

Truth, righteousness, peace, faith, salvation, the Word, and prayer keep us spiritually anchored when uncertainty starts pulling at our judgment.

Truth keeps fear from rewriting the story.

Peace steadies us when everything feels unsettled.

Faith reminds us that what we can see is not the whole of what is true.

The Word gives us something firmer than the thought shouting the loudest.

Prayer keeps our attention connected to God when our minds want to live inside the problem.

Abiding does not always give you clarity immediately. Sometimes it keeps fear, exhaustion, and urgency from becoming your focus.

Keep your eyes on Him.

So if you do not know what to do next, stand firm and stay close.

And when the next step becomes clear, move with conviction in faith, not fear.

Thoughts to Dwell On

What am I allowing to take more of my attention than God right now?

Is there a decision I am trying to force because I am uncomfortable with waiting?

A Prayer

Lord, when I do not know what to do, help me keep my eyes on You.

Quiet the fear, exhaustion, and urgency that compete for my attention. Help me remember what is true, stay close to You in the waiting, and trust You enough not to force an answer before it is clear.

Give me peace while I wait, wisdom to recognize conviction when it comes, and courage to move in faith when it is time.

Keep me grounded in You so that fear is never the voice that leads me.

Amen.
